About us

The hospital opened its Department of Stereotactic and Radiation Neurosurgery in October, 1992.  The unit specializes in stereotactic neurosurgery (minimally invasive interventions), which covers minimally invasive diagnostic tissue sampling from the brain (biopsies), the insertion of cerebral electrodes for diagnostic purposes (e.g. in epileptic patients), implantation of therapeutic stimulatory systems in patients with various disorders of the muscular apparatus (most frequently those suffering from Parkinsons Disease), interventions in the deep structures of the brain to treat intractable pain and, most important of all, precisely targeted radiation using the Leksell gamma knife.
The Gamma Knife was purchased in 1992 through a national collection organized by the Charta 77 Foundation.  The graph below shows the total number of operations performed using the gamma knife between October 1992 and December 31st 2004, along with the percentage represented by individual diagnostic groups.

Graph no. 1

26.10.1992-31.12.2006
8,025 radiosurgical operations

Our center is also a world leader in the radiosurgical treatment of ophthalmologic indications and the importance of individual diagnostic groups currently treated by gamma knife is illustrated in the graph below, which shows cumulative numbers of patients treated during 2004.

Graph no. 2

2006:
802 radiosurgical operations using the Leksell Gamma Knife.
