About us

Ophthalmologic microsurgery is in constant search of new microsurgical methods and continually introducing cutting-edge technological options in an attempt to reduce the number of perioperational and post-operational complications to a minimum. We are currently building a state-of-the-art microsurgical eye department in the unit. The number of surgical interventions on the anterior segment have increased many-fold. The main operations are to remove cataracts and corneal transplants, which last year were included in the range of procedures we offer. We are also able to treat severe trauma injuries, most of which require surgery under general anesthesia and a short period of hospitalization.

Approximately 0.5% of the population undergo cataract surgery each year, and it is the most common intra-ocular procedure for patients over the age of 65. The level of visual acuity is very important for indications for cataract operations, but this is not decisive. The deciding factor is an objective finding of hardening of the lens, corresponding to the patient’s subjective discomfort. The method of choice for cataract surgery has remained the same since the 19th century, ultrasound phacoemulsification with the implantation of soft intra-ocular lenses, avoiding the need to suture corneal wounds. Artificial intra-ocular lenses are made from flexible acrylic or silicon. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis using local instillation anesthesia (i.e. anesthesia through the application of eyedrops). The ophthalmosurgeons in our department are among the best qualified professionals in the Czech Republic, not only in terms of the numbers of operated patients – which amount to several thousands – but primarily through the experience they have gained in centers in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Corneal transplants are the most frequently performed transplants in human medicine. The long-term survival of grafts used in keratoplasty for corneal perforations is over 90% in low-risk patients, although this figure falls to under 35% in high-risk patients. Thanks to the modern imaging methods used for glaucoma diagnostics over recent years, we are better able to apply therapeutic procedures ranging from pharmacological treatment through laser trabeculoplasty to filtration surgery.

We can also assist to correct refractive errors and are able to cure severe nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism through refractive surgical interventions, such as the implantation of phakic intraocular lenses, the refractive removal of clear lenses, or curing astigmatism by corneal incisions. However, the patient or the person interested in no longer using glasses to correct refractive errors, must meet the costs of these intervention him/herself. There has also been a marked increase in the popularity and success of refractive surgery in the Czech Republic over the past few years.

We use the latest generation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment for our diagnoses.
