Na Homolce Hospital´s Department of Neurosurgery was created in 1990 and within two years had grown to its current size of 62 beds, of which 8 are in the intensive care sector and 12 receive semi-intensive care.  15 physicians currently work in the department - 7 qualified neurosurgeons, 3 qualified neurologists, 5 general physicians and a clinical psychologist.  The Department of Neurosurgery carries out around 2,000 operations annually, about 2,500 patients are admitted and around 3,500 outpatients are examined each year.

Na Homolce´s neurosurgery unit is, in terms of the quantity of interventions and certainly in terms of their quality, currently the top-ranking facility in the Czech Republic, providing complex neurosurgical treatment for all types of nervous disorders that require it.

The neurosurgery unit is exceptional in the complexity of the services it can provide thanks to the existence of the Department of Stereotactic and Radiation Neurosurgery (Gamma Knife), with which it works in close collaboration to treat certain complicated diseases.  Because the hospital is extremely well equipped with the latest radiodiagnostic and other examination methodology, including PET (positron emmission tomography), the neurosurgery staff are able to carry out the most demanding examinations.

As concerns neurosurgical treatment itself, we focus on treating all types of cerebral tumor; in this area we also carry out totally new experimental treatment of malignant glioms.  The Department is one of the most experienced in the surgical treatment of epilepsy in the Czech Republic, an area where it collaborates with Na Homolce´s Department of Neurology.  It also works with the Department of Radiology to deal with certain complex vascular disorders of the brain  (occlusion of cerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations etc.).
The Neurosurgery department is also known for its work in the field of spondylosurgery, where it carries out a full range of spinal operations on all sections of the spine and it is pioneering the use of fixation surgery.
