About us
Na Homolce' s Epilepsy Center provides diagnostic and therapeutic care for epilepsy patients from throughout the country. We are a tertiary epileptological center, a center for the surgical treatment of epilepsy (one of only four such units in the Czech Republic), and we also act as consultants to other neurological facilities..
Na Homolce Hospital Department of Neurology contributes to undergraduate and post-graduate training of physicians, providing courses in epileptology and EEG for the Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Studies, while its physicians lecture to students attending the medical faculty.
Our particular specialty is dealing with patients with pharmacoresistant (drug-resistant) diseases and the possible methods of treating them surgically.
During the course of 2003, 2,112 patients visited our two epileptological outpatient clinics. A further 212 were admitted to our monitoring unit for further examination. We operate on over 30 patients each year (2003 saw 42 operations); which conforms to European and international standards. Since 1994, our center's results have been comparable with those of major centers worldwide.
An interdisciplinary team of specialists work together in the Center, providing input from areas such as neurology-epileptology, neurosurgery specializing in epileptosurgery, neuroradiology and neuro-psychology, assisted by highly trained nursing staff (EEG laboratory personnel, nurses).
Our state-of-the-art hospital facilities enable us to perform the full range of examinations needed for accurate diagnostics and to allow us to decide on which is the correct procedure to follow. Epileptosurgery is one of the primary programs for the hospital as a whole.
The monitoring unit within the neurology department has four beds equipped with video-EEG for long-term monitoring. The high-quality 1.5 T scanner not only produces high-resolution magnetic resonance images but can also carry out functional magnetic resonance if required. The Department of Neurosurgery uses the STEALTH neuronavigation system during resections. The Department of Nuclear Medicine /PET Center is the only facility in the country to offer positron emission tomography scans. The Department of Stereotactic and Radiation Neurosurgery is also unique in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures it provides for the center.
We are the only center in the Czech Republic as well as in Europe to offer the option of minimally invasive stereotactic keyhole operations to eliminate pathological bodies in the brain that cause seizures, in addition to standard surgical methods.
